Teresa Gordon

Born in the Waikato Teresa has lived in Northland for over 20 years. She graduated with a Diploma of Design, majoring in illustration, from the Waikato Institute of Technology in 1995. Teresa started paining full time in 2004. She has participated in many group and solo exhibitions, her works have been shown in galleries throughout New Zealand.

In 2012 Teresa and her partner welcomed their daughter into the world. During this period Teresa took time off painting full time but she continued to paint for enjoyment. Recently Teresa has decided to make a more serious commitment to get back into her art practice.

Teresa’s latest works are a continuation of her love of mark making and mixed media. She is currently developing her previous experimentation with textures and layers, also reappearing are images of birds and horses. Primary using acrylics, inks, pastels and graphite Teresa starts with a vague idea in her head but her paintings are process driven. It is through the manipulation of materials, layering, pouring, scraping back, drawing, working intuitively until the final artwork is revealed.

Teresa draws inspiration from nature and is also interested in sustainably and consumerism, often incorporating recycled elements into her artworks.

Teresa lives with her partner and daughter in the Bay of Islands on a small lifestyle block with their two dogs, two chickens, herd of mini cattle and flock of arapawa sheep. They have a small beekeeping business which she helps with. Hobbies include crafts, mountain biking, gardening and anything outdoors. She is always amazed and inspired by the unlimited beauty of nature.

Artist statement;

“I love to paint and create. Driven by a need to make marks my paintings are formed intuitively. Layers are painted, sprayed, dripped, drawn, removed, reapplied. Details are often added to create a juxtaposition between the intentional and the expressive freedom of the unknown.”
