Jan Stevenson – 2020 IN FOCUS

Paintings by Jan Stevenson

The Covid 19 Pandemic has touched humanity on an unprecedented global level.  Jan Stevenson has created a body of work that covers a painted slice of our current times.  From lockdowns to global political unrest, power struggles to increasing chaos and division, from second waves and managed isolation to personal safety measures and coping in this uncertain climate.

Jan is a full-time Abstract and Mixed-Media Artist who has been immersed in the arts one way or another for most of her life, coming from a family of artists, and from a young age has always been curious about the next creative step.  Jan studied art in High School through to her senior year.  She always wanted to attend Elam Art School but practicality won out and instead she studied for a business diploma at A.I.T. which set her on a path into corporate Auckland.  Jan, born and raised in Auckland, has lived in Kerikeri for 26 years. Jan recommenced her artistic journey on returning to Kerikeri, for the second time, 14 years ago and seized the opportunity to embrace her art again.

Since returning to Kerikeri Jan has enjoyed Art Tuition from some very accomplished and talented tutors. She attended Mike Nettman’s very inspirational Advanced Abstract Art Course for 3 ½ years and spent 2 ½ years enjoying tutoring/mentoring from well- known Artist Scott McFarlane. In 2016 Jan completed a Te Wananga o Aotearoa Certificate in Maori Art with tutor, renowned Maori Artist, Theresa Reihana and graduated June 2017.

She has been an active member of KOAST from its inception in 2014 and was a member of the KOAST Committee in 2015.

“ I am drawn to abstract and mixed media works because of the freedom of expression this allows and over the past years have also enjoyed producing new pieces of sculptural wall art.  I am constantly experimenting and exploring new and challenging ways of creating.  I work mainly with acrylic paint, occasionally using oils and I enjoy exploring a wide range of mixed media techniques and products.  Music is extremely important to me when creating and I become immersed in both the music and the process.  My work is contemporary, often colourful and occasionally controversial. I have been successfully exhibiting and selling my works for the past 8 years and have artworks in private collections in: Wellington, Auckland, Matakana, Kerikeri, Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany”.

Jan’s artwork can be viewed on Facebook and very shortly on the Bay of Islands Creative Online Gallery.
